Srila Prabhupada on Srimad Bhagavatam, Part 20
BY: SUN STAFF
Mar 24, 2011 CANADA (SUN) A serial exploration of Srila Prabhupada's preaching on Srimad Bhagavatam.
We began our study of Srimad Bhagavatam 1.1.2 by offering the complete text and purport from Srila Prabhupada's original Bhagwatam edition. Next, we worked our way through all five of his lectures on this verse, extracting the essential points (or at least, many of the essential points) from each lecture. Today, we further categorize these primary points by grouping them under the specific statement in the translated sloka which they appear to be most closely associated with.

"Completely rejecting all religious activities which are materially motivated, this Bhagavata Purana propounds the highest truth, which is understandable by those devotees who are fully pure in heart. The highest truth is reality distinguished from illusion for the welfare of all. Such truth uproots the threefold miseries. This beautiful Bhagavatam, compiled by the great sage Vyasadeva [in his maturity], is sufficient in itself for God realization. What is the need of any other scripture? As soon as one attentively and submissively hears the message of Bhagavatam, by this culture of knowledge the Supreme Lord is established within his heart."
Completely rejecting all religious activities which are materially motivated
Our main business is how to develop Krsna consciousness. We should not bother about other things. Ahara-nidra-bhaya-maithunam ca (Mahabharata). But these things are there. Solutions must be based on religion. Learn how to become God conscious.
This human form of life is so rare. If you are simply engaged in eating sleeping, sense gratification, and defending, then where is the advancement? Inquiry should be there, "What I am? What I am put into these tribulations of conditional life under the laws of nature?"
From the very beginning, in primary schools, Krsna consciousness should be taught. Unfortunately, there is no such arrangement. So you go to the so-called authorities, rascals.
An English proverb say: "Self-preservation is the first law of nature"? What is that? So self means soul. Your soul may not fall down. That is your first business.
In the human society the first thing is that there must be religion, and religion means pious life.
Religion, then economic development. Dharmena hinah pasubhih samanah (Hitopadesa 25). Atma-dharma or bhagavata-dharma.
Human civilization should be based first of all on religion, dharma. According to Prahlada Maharaja, dharman bhagavatan -- dharma means God consciousness, Krsna consciousness. That is dharma, that is religion.
Brahmana, ksatriya, vaisya, sudra. In every human society these natural divisions of society are already there.
There is volumes of philosophy of life, from all angles of vision. Dharma, artha, kama, moksa. From the point of religion, from the point of economic development, sense gratification, and ultimate liberation, back to Godhead.
We have got senses that must be satisfied, but that sense gratification should be based on religion. Dharma, artha. Sense gratification means economic development, without which we cannot enjoy our senses, but it should be based on religion. Without religion, simply gratifying the senses or so-called economic development, is animal civilization.
dharma artha kama moksa. These four things are meant for people advanced in civilization. Not spiritually, but advanced in civilization.
Dharma is the basic principle of civilization. dharmena hinah pasubhih samanah (Hitopadesa 25). If there is no dharma, then it is the society of the animals.
Dharma does not mean a faith. It is compulsory. The compulsory law is that God is great, and we are subordinate or servant of God. You may believe or not believe; the God's law will apply upon you forcibly.
You may believe or not believe; you have to die. Similarly, one may believe or not believe; he has to take birth.
Death means to give up this body and accept another body. tatha dehantara-praptir dhiras tatra na muhyati (Bg 2.13). A child must accept the body of a boy. The boy, he must accept next the body of a youth, and the youth must accept the old man's body. This is the law of God. You must accept it.
Nature cannot work automatically without the incentive or manipulation of God behind nature. Foolish people think that nature is working automatically. mayadhyaksena prakrtih (Bg 9.10).
Dharma means the codes or the law given by God. One may have faith, or not have faith. It doesn't matter. The codes or law given by God, that is a fact.
There are four principles in human society: dharma, artha, kama, and moksa. First of all become religious, and then you solve your economic problem, and then satisfy your senses, and then become one with God.
Secular... they don't care for any kind of religion, just work very hard for economic development day and night. This is the modern civilization.
Without religious life, so-called economic development means implication. Sat-sanga chadi' kainu asate vilasa, te-karane lagila ye karma-bandha-phansa (SB 10.10.18).
If the society is based on religion, why are there thieves and rogues? Because they're not trained.
Now people are not even anxious to protect this body. They violate so many laws of eating, sleeping, mating, and become diseased. Try to protect yourself first, then dharma, then your religious principle, then dhana, then money.
Irreligious life is a barbarous condition. Eating, sleeping, fearing, and mating are the four principles of animal life. These are common both to animals and to human beings. But religion is the extra function of the human beings. At the present moment, religion is being sacrificed. So it is animal society.
In the lower stages of human civilization, there is always competition to lord it over the material nature. The great two wars began from Europe simply on this basis.
Anyone who has developed how to exploit the resources of nature, that nation is called highly civilized or advanced. But that is the lowest stage of civilization.
In the name of religion, there are so many things going on. At the present moment, in whichever category of religion one may belong to, nobody is following strictly the religious principles. That is called kaitava, cheating.
Any religion which does not teach about God, which does not know what is God, that is cheating religion. That's all. dharmah projjhita-kaitavo 'tra. Cheating religion.
When one accepts some religion he must know, "What is God, what I am, what is my relationship with God, what are the laws of God, how I am to act." So many things you have to learn. Simply stamping myself with some rubber stamp that "I belong to this religion, I belong to that religion," that will not help. That is cheating.
If you follow the religious principles in whichever religion you accept, then you are pious. If you do not follow the religious principles, then you are impious, duskrtina.
duskrtina means miscreants or always engaged in sinful activities. If you are not religious, then you must act sinfully.
You cannot manufacture any laws of religion. Religion means the order or the laws given by God. dharmah projjhita-kaitavah atra, cheating type of religious system.
sarva-dharman parityajya mam ekam saranam vraja (Bg 18.66). "You have manufactured so many religious system. So you give up all these. You simply surrender unto Me."
They are instructing, If you want economic development, why you are going to church and temple? Just start industry. You'll get money. That is, propaganda is going on.
This is propaganda. "God cannot give us bread, but our political leader can give us bread." But they are innocent. They do not know that this rascal politician, wherefrom he has brought the bread? Has he manufactured in the factory wheat, rice, grains? Then unless God has given you grain, wheat, rice and other grains, how you can make bread?
Real religion means "God is there. I am there. God is great. I am subordinate. I must abide by the laws of God." This is religion.
"First-class religion," yato bhaktir adhoksaje" (SB 1.2.6) which teaches us how to surrender to God and love Him." Ahaituky apratihata yayatma suprasidati (SB 1.2.6). Ahaituki means without any motive. Apratihata, without any checking.
Everything is there, complete. purnam adah purnam idam purnat purnam udacyate (Isopanisad Invocation). God's creation is perfect. There cannot be any imperfectness. Even there is overpopulation, God will supply food.
Because we have no faith in God, we have forgotten God, we do not know what is God, therefore we have created the economic problem. Otherwise there is no problem.
Everything is there. Ahara-nidra-bhaya, the four things required for this body. But even a small duck and swan, he has got everything ready there in St. James Park. He does not go to the Downing Street.
"If the swan is already provided with all the necessities of life, then I shall also be provided with all the necessities of life. There is no need of endeavoring for it." tasyaiva hetoh prayateta kovido (SB 1.5.18)
There are 8,400,000 forms of living entity. Only 400,000 forms are human body. So eight million... they are getting all their foodstuff supplied by God.
"If God can supply eight million types of different lower animals, then why shall not God give the necessities of life to the human society?"
According to Vedic civilization, there should not be rivalry. tena tyaktena bhunjithah (Isopanisad 1). You be satisfied what is allotted to you. Don't try to encroach upon others' property. ma grdhah kasya svid dhanam (Isavasya Upanisad 1).
In 1942 there was a man-made famine, and in India so many people died of starvation. There was scarcity of foodstuff, but when public began to give them food, they ate so much that they fell sick and died. By starvation, nobody dies; by overeating, one dies. That is a statistic. The next death rate is for over-eating. In America is it not?
Krsna has provided everyone's food. There is no problem. It is mistake to accept it that "Because there is overpopulation in the world, there is problem."
There is no question of starvation. Then why rivalry? Rivalry means "I want to enjoy more sense gratification"
We can produce foodstuff for supplying food, ten times of the whole world population. So there is no need of approaching God with a motive for material supplies or satisfaction.
The problems for lower animal is there when they are in the city, but if they live natural life, there is no problem.
God supplies immense bread or eatable things without any asking. In African jungle there are hundreds, thousands of elephants. They eat a huge quantity of food. But still, they are supplied by God.
kata catur-anana mari mari yavata. The so-called leaders are coming and going, but because there is no God consciousness, the problems are there.
There are two classes of men: atheists and theists. The theist, who believes in God, whenever he is distressed, whenever he is facing some problem, he turns towards God. It is described in Bhagavad-gita, catur-vidha bhajante mam sukrtinah arjuna (Bg 7.16). Similarly, the opposite number, that is called duskrtina.
Religion does not mean to solve the economic problem.
They think that "If I have to ask bread from God, so why shall I go to God? Let me earn money very nicely, and I can purchase bread. Why shall I go to church?" On account of this motivated religion, the communists are taking advantage, and they are preaching Godlessness.
"We, in the church we asked for bread. There was no supply of bread. And as soon as I prayed bread from the communist leader, there are so many breads." But the innocent people, they do not know that this communist leader has supplied bread not from his father's stock; it is from the stock of God. Food grains, the wheat or the pulses, that is not made by communist leader.
If we approach God for some material benefit, we may be cheated. dharmah projjhita atra kaitavah (SB 1.1.2): "This kind of motivated religious system is completely thrown away from this Srimad-Bhagavatam."
nityo nityanam cetanas cetananam, eko yo bahunam vidadhati kaman (Katha Upanisad 2.2.13). The description of God is given: "He is also living entity like us. He is also eternal like us." What is the difference between Him and us? eko yo bahunam vidadhati kaman (Katha Upanisad 2.2.13): "That one God is supplying all the necessities of these many."
Any religion you may profess--it doesn't matter--I want to see whether you have got the result of religion. The result of religion is you will love God.
dharmah svanusthitah pumsam (SB 1.2.8), not that anyone who is not following strictly the religious principles. Even if he is following strictly the religious principle... dharmah svanusthitah pumsam (SB 1.2.8). But the result should be that he should be a lover of God.
By following any system of religion, if we do not develop our dormant love for God, then following such religious principle means simply waste of time. That's all. Because it has no effect. Effect should be by following religious principle you must develop love of Godhead. That is our bhagavata-dharma.
tasyaiva hetoh prayateta kovido (SB 1.5.18), "One should try for developing God consciousness, not for anything else, because happiness and distress, they come automatically."
"As distress comes without any desire, similarly, happiness also will come without any endeavor."
In the human life, the endeavor should be how to find out or revive our relationship with God.
Advancement of Krsna consciousness means you will be pushed how to preach -- sravanam kirtanam. Hear nicely about the Krsna consciousness movement, then kirtanam, preaching, chanting.
…this Bhagavata Purana propounds the highest truth, which is understandable by those devotees who are fully pure in heart.
The Mayavadis think that "God is formless, impersonal, but I cannot meditate upon anything which is formless. So let me imagine something." That is their theory. sadhakanam hitarthaya brahmano rupa-kalpanah. Kalpana, "imagine." And we say, "No. isvarah paramah krsnah sac-cid-ananda-vigrahah. He has got form, but not a form like me." That we know.
So many religious systems say, "God has no form. There is no God. Let us imagine." This is cheating religion. dharmah projjhita-kaitavo 'tra(SB 1.1.2). Cheating. Because there is no real information.
The Christian Bible says, "Man is made after God." So unless God has got form, two hands, two legs, how man has got two hands, two legs? If we are imitation of God, then God must be person. This is natural conclusion.
They cannot imagine that a form of sac-cid-ananda can be possible. That is their lack of knowledge. Krsna has got also two hands, He is also playing flute, with consort, Radharani. Everything is there. Only the ingredients are different.
With material eyes, we cannot see God. Therefore the process is that we have to purify our eyes, our legs, our hands, and everything, so that we may be able to serve God.
This arcana-paddhati, devotional service, although we have got this material body, under the direction of sastra and spiritual master, we are trying to serve God, Krsna. That service is as good as the service in the spiritual world. There is no difference.
When devotional service is ripened by practicing, practicing, when one is accustomed, he develops love for God. Then he cannot do without it.
We cannot see spiritual form at the present moment. atah sri-krsna-namadi na bhaved grahyam indriyaih (Cc Madhya 17.136). Therefore Krsna appears in a way so that we can see, arca-avatara, incarnation of worshipable Deity. We should be respectful just exactly as Krsna is here. Don't make differentiation, that "This Krsna is stone statue."
Similarly the spiritual master is not an ordinary man, arcye sila-dhir gurusu nara-matir vaisnave jati-buddhih (Padma Purana), not to accept a Vaisnava as belonging to some caste and creed.
I alone started this movement. There is so much response because they are hankering after this. Caitanya Mahaprabhu hinted therefore: bharata-bhumite haila manusya-janma yara (Cc. Adi 9.41), "Those who have taken birth as human being as Indian, on the land of Bharatavarsa, they should learn their spiritual asset and distribute it throughout the world for real welfare activity."
Now it is in your hand, you European and American young boys and girls. You take it seriously. From India they are coming, but I am very sorry to inform, they are not delivering the real culture.
You are intelligent boys and girls. You have taken this Krsna consciousness movement. Try to understand more philosophically and distribute all over the world. That is my request. Otherwise the world is doomed.
This bhagavata-dharma or Krsna consciousness is meant for persons who are not envious. paramo nirmatsaranam. nirmatsara. matsarata means to become intolerant when his neighbor is prosperous.
The Vaikuntha consciousness is that if your neighbor or brother is prosperous or progressive, then one should think, "Oh, he's so nice that he has served God so nicely. God is so pleased upon him that he is making so nice progress." Material consciousness is that, "Oh, he has advanced so much. Oh, let me check him." Enviousness.
bhagavata-dharma is not for envious persons. paramo nirmatsaranam satam. They will not be able to understand what is spoken in the Srimad-Bhagavatam. srimad-bhagavate maha-muni-krte kim va parair isvarah sadyo hrdy avarudhyate.
Because we are envious by nature, therefore we have to cleanse our heart. We have to chant Hare Krsna mantra very rigidly, regularly. Then our enviousness, the dirty things will be over, and we shall be able to understand what is Srimad-Bhagavatam.
The highest truth is reality distinguished from illusion for the welfare of all.
The ultimate aim is liberation from this conditional life, bondage. As soon as we are embodied with a material body, immediately we are conditioned.
You see under conditioning, therefore your seeing power is imperfect. Your thinking power is imperfect. We are gathering knowledge by the imperfect senses.
We are being put into different conditions, under different types of body. Liberation means that one shall not be under any condition. Just like Krsna, He is not under any condition. That is liberation. And because we are part and parcel of Krsna, we can also become without any condition.
Each and every planet, each and every universe is differently conditioned. That is the beauty of Krsna's creation. kesava tuwa jagat vicitra.
There is no man in this world who can say that "I never committed any mistake." That is not possible. He must be illusioned. What is that illusion? yasyatma-buddhih kunape tri-dhatuke (SB 10.84.13).
This is conditional life. Everyone is thinking, "I am this body." Everyone is committing mistake. Illusion and mistake.
Why they have become conditioned? The reason is they revolted against Krsna. They wanted to imitate Krsna.
There are eight million different species of life below the human society, but there is no question of God consciousness.
In bodies lower than the human being, there is no question of liberation. Out of the 8,400,000's of species of life, for 3,000 species of life there is no question of liberation. prakrteh kriyamanani gunaih karmani sarvasah.
You have accepted this material body voluntarily for enjoying this material world. Now enjoy it to the fullest extent under the condition of stringent laws of material nature.
In the human form of life, civilized, your consciousness is now developed. There is a chance to understand why you are conditioned. Remember this is the difference between other bodies and this body.
This is actual human life, not simply imitating the animals: how to eat, how to sleep, how to sex.
Conditioned life means we must have four disqualifications: to commit mistake, to become illusioned, to become cheater, and to possess imperfect senses. This is our qualification. And we want to write books and philosophy. Just see.
We have got four defects, namely we commit mistake, we are sometimes illusioned, and sometimes we do not know properly anything… we should know that our present material senses are imperfect.
We acquire knowledge by using our different senses. Therefore, because they are imperfect, whatever knowledge we gather by speculation, that is imperfect. If we take knowledge from personalities who are liberated, that knowledge is perfect. This is the process of acquiring knowledge in the Krsna consciousness movement.
One blind man, one cheater is cheating another blind man, cheating. Therefore my Guru Maharaja used to say this material world is a society of cheaters and cheated. That's all.
I want to be cheated because I don't accept God. If there is God, then I become responsible for my sinful life. Therefore let me deny God. Somebody comes, "Yes, I am God." "Oh, sir, you are God? Yes. That's all right." Because he wanted to be cheated. We cannot accept such God. We accept Krsna. isvarah paramah krsnah sac-cid-ananda-vigrahah (Brahma-samhita 5.1).
Everyone should know what he is, what is his constitutional position, why he is under so many conditions of life, how to get liberation. These questions are called brahma-jijnasa.
Animals cannot take nice instruction. They do not know that they are spirit soul, they are not this body. This is called illusion.
There are five kinds of liberation: sayujya-mukti, sarupya-mukti, salokya-mukti, sarsti-mukti...hmm...sayujya, sarupya, salokya, sarsti, samipya.
The first liberation, as the jnanis or the speculators want, it is another side of voidism, to merge into the existence of the Absolute. They don't want varieties, because they have got a very bad experience of the varieties in the material world.
Sayujya-mukti, to merge into the existence of the... to become one with the Supreme. That is possible. You can have it, but it you lose your individuality, you can get eternity, but you cannot get blissful life of knowledge, because you lose your individuality. So that is suicidal.
So many rascal philosophers and scientists, they have no accurate knowledge, but they are writing books. This is cheating.
So-called scientists and philosophers don't see who is pushing on this button, this material world is going on. gacchati iti jagat. Every planet is going on.
The jnanis are discriminating, "No, this is not God." The scientists say, "This is the fact." these kind of speculative habits or scientific research is simply a waste of time. They cannot understand what is the ultimate truth.
jnane prayasam udapasya. "Give up this nonsense habit, speculation." mamanta eva: "Be submissive. Admit that you do not know anything. You have to learn from the person who knows." Just try to learn about God from the pure devotee. san-mukharitam bhavadiya-vartam (SB 10.14.3).
Vaisnavas accept sarupya-mukti, to have the same features of the body like Visnu. In Vaikunthalokas all the living entities, devotees, they have got four hands. And only in Krsnaloka, Krsna has got two hands and His devotees also have two hands. Although the devotees and living entities get the same feature of body like Narayana, Visnu, they're not visnu-tattva. That is called sayujya, sarupya.
Krsna is killing Putana at the age of three months old only. A seven year old boy is lifting a hill. God must execute uncommon acts, otherwise how shall I accept God, if He's like me?
It is not that we are serving, we have no sense gratification. Married couples are there. Nothing is prohibited; everything is there. But it is adjusted according to rules and regulations, not like cats and dogs. That is religious life, pious life.
If it is a human being society, there must be principles of religion. If there is no religion, then it is animal society.
The real basic principle of religion means the laws given by God. A devotee means one who is abiding by the laws given by God.
If religion is the code given by God, then we must know. Like a child – if a child is abiding by the laws, but doesn't know who is the law-giver, how the street is managed, he's to be considered as in ignorance.
What is the value of London or New York City? Go twenty-five miles above, you cannot see your city. It is all finished. Similarly, there are so many universes, seas, mountains, skyscraper, houses we cannot see, because in the universe they are all simply insignificant particles.
To manage this universal affair, the Supreme Lord, has many laws and regulations. Intelligent men will understand that if there are so many rules and regulations in a small place, in so big a place, so universal -- andantara-stha-paramanu (Bs. 5.35) -- there are laws.
It is explained in Bhagavad-gita, that these material laws of nature are very strong. They are enacted by the Supreme Lord, mayadhyaksena prakrtih suyate sa-caracaram (Bg. 9.10). Mayadhyaksena, "Under My superintendence."
Krsna has got assistants, 330,000,000 assistants within one universe, and there are innumerable universes. In each and every universe, there must be similarly 330,000,000's or like that. They are called demigods. Demigods means exactly under the position of God.
We don't deny the existence of demigod, but we don't worship that he is God. We Vaisnavas, we are prepared to offer respect even to the ant, and why not to the secretary? We give all honor to the demigods, but we don't accept them as the Supreme. As it is stated in the Caitanya-caritamrta: ekale isvara krsna (Cc Adi 5.142). isvarah paramah krsnah (Bs. 5.1). The only master, or controller, is Krsna.
Not everyone gets to see the Queen, but if he says, "Oh, there is no Queen," or "Queen is dead," will it be accepted? Similarly, some rascals who do not know how this universe is being managed may say, "God is dead, there is no God."
Even Professor Einstein, he agreed, that "As I advance, I see there must be a big brain, God."
A sane man will say, "There must be somebody, the origin of everything." Athato brahma-jijnasa. Let us discuss about the Supreme Absolute Truth. The answer is that Brahman, the Supreme, is that from whom everything comes out. Janmady asya yatah (SB 1.1.1). Dharma, religion, means to understand that origin.
We have now become Godless, we have no information of God, but if you read Srimad-Bhagavatam, then immediately you will realize God.
Try to understand what is God, what is your relationship with God, and act accordingly. You will be immediately peaceful. As soon as you become peaceful, your life is successful.
Such truth uproots the threefold miseries.
On account of this material body, we have got three-fold miseries, so many things over which we have no control. If you take up this religious system--means how to love God--then you will be transcendental to all the miserable conditions of material existence.
As soon as you understand Srimad-Bhagavatam, then we become free from tapa-traya, the threefold miseries of material life - adhibhautika, adhidaivika, or adhyatmika.
"This type of religion means to love God", sivadam tapa-traya unmulanam (SB 1.1.2), and the three-fold miserable condition of life is completely uprooted.
This beautiful Bhagavatam, compiled by the great sage Vyasadeva [in his maturity], is sufficient in itself for God realization.
Vyasadeva, tri-kala-jna, maha-muni, he is liberated. He is incarnation of God. He knows past, present, future, and everything. That knowledge is perfect. One who knows past, present, and future perfectly, we should take knowledge from him.
These practices, are given in the Srimad-Bhagavatam which is compiled not by any ordinary person, but srimad-bhagavate maha-muni-krte, the greatest sage, Vyasadeva.
Srimad-Bhagavatam is not written by a rascal who is sure to commit mistake, who is sure to become illusioned, who is sure to cheat others, and whose senses are imperfect. srimad-bhagavate maha-muni-krte.
Maha-muni-krte srimad-bhagavate. It is not ordinary persons writing whimsical, manufactured story. No. srimad-bhagavate maha-muni-krte: it is beyond all defects of human life.
One who is imperfect, who is subjected to so many defects of life, we cannot accept knowledge from them. This is our Krsna consciousness movement. We don't accept. We accept knowledge from the Vedas, which is perfect.
tad viddhi pranipatena (Bg 4.34). One who knows the Absolute Truth, go there and take knowledge by surrendering.
After you surrender, after you render service, then ask questions. Otherwise, there is no need of question. Don't waste your time, don't waste his time. A spiritual master is not obliged to answer anyone except his disciple. This is the Vedic way.
Servant class, that is called nicavat. A brahmacari living at the care of spiritual master, he is advised to carry out the orders of the spiritual master nicavat, just like the sudra class. Because a person coming to spiritual master, they are coming from brahmana family, or ksatriya or high caste family.
Everyone is puffed up with some so-called knowledge, and he thinks, "I am perfectly all right. My knowledge is perfect. Why shall I surrender?" But if you want to receive knowledge actually from the person who has actually knowledge, then you must surrender there.
Vyasadeva is describing Lord Buddha's incarnation. Sammohaya sura-dvisam, buddho namnanjana-sutah kikatesu bhavisyati. He's writing bhavisyati, in future tense. Lord Buddha appeared on this planet 2,600 years ago, and this book was written 5,000 years ago.
This is the Vedic process. om namo bhagavate vasudevaya. janmady asya yatah satyam param dhimahi (SB 1.1.1). Instead of speculating, simply surrender to Vyasadeva, his writings, srimad-bhagavate maha-muni-krte (SB 1.1.2), then you do not require to study any other literature.
What is the need of any other scripture?
Srimad-Bhagavatam is the graduate study. Those who are interested in God, for them, this is graduate study. The entrance study is Bhagavad-gita.
In Bhagavad-gita, the ultimate instruction is sarva-dharman parityajya mam ekam saranam vraja (Bg 18.66). My dear Arjuna," guhyatamam. "You simply surrender unto Me, and I shall give you all protection."
Unless we have finished nicely the study of Bhagavad-gita or unless we have accepted this proposition of God that "You surrender," there is no entrance in the Srimad-Bhagavatam.
nama-rupe kali-kale krsna-avatara (Cc. Adi 17.22). Krsna is incarnated in His name in this age. You associate with Krsna's name, immediately associate with Krsna.
Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu begins His teaching where Krsna ended.
Revati-nandana asks, are there lines of disciplic succession on planets all over the universe or only on these middle planets, like Earth? Prabhupada answers, all over the universe. Narada is moving all over the universe and creating disciples.
To please the spiritual master, just follow his order. Spiritual master is along with you by his words. Just like my spiritual master is not physically present, but I am associating with him by his words.
Due to the age of Kali, human society is degrading. So only we can save by Krsna consciousness movement. If not all, some of them can be saved.
aradhyo bhagavan vrajesa-tanayas tad-dhama vrndavanam (Sri Caitanya-mata-manjusa-mangalacarana). As Krsna is worshipable, similarly, Vrndavana is also.
Vrndavana cannot be polluted. Just like within the heart of a hog there is Krsna. It does not mean Krsna's staying in polluted place. The sunshine may be in the filthy place, but sun is not polluted. The filthy place is purified.
It will change in the Satya-yuga. Just like our body is changed, season is changed, similarly, this will also change.
As soon as one attentively and submissively hears the message of Bhagavatam, by this culture of knowledge the Supreme Lord is established within his heart.
If you surrender to the study of Srimad-Bhagavatam, that Isvara, the supreme controller, sadyo hrdy avarudhyate... Isvara is already there, but avarudhyate, "He is locked up." In whose heart He becomes locked up? krtibhih, those who are pious.
As soon as you surrender, immediately you become pious. How immediately? sarva-dharman parityajya (Bg 18.66). As soon as you surrender: "Krsna, I was misled so long. Now, today, I am surrendering unto Your lotus feet. Now, if You like, You kill me or protect me, as You like." Then everything is all right.
"Give up everything. Simply surrender unto Me alone." mam ekam. He doesn't say even to Narayana or Visnu. He says particularly, mam ekam, "Only unto Me alone."
God cannot allow you to jump over His head. You can, but that requires great advancement of love for God. Just like the cowherd boys, they are jumping over Krsna. That position... You can also have, but after krta-punya-punjah. ittham satam brahma-sukhanubhutya (SB 10.12.11).
Where Krsna ended? sarva-dharman parityajya mam ekam saranam vraja (Bg 18.66). And Caitanya Mahaprabhu begins from there. jivera svarupa haya nitya-krsna-dasa (Cc Madhya 20.108-109). When Sanatana Gosvami inquired from him, "What I am?", He replied that "You are eternal servant of Krsna." This is the beginning of bhagavata-dharma.
vedyam vastavam atra vastu sivadam tapa-trayonmulanam. Vastu means summum bonum, original, and the vastava. Just like Krsna and His different energies. The different energies are called vastava, "in relationship with vastu," and Krsna is vastu.
You can understand Krsna in all His features. And if you understand, then sivadam, it is auspicious.
(Question about mutation and variation, and how one species evolves from another species:) By the mind, intelligence and ego. At the time of death, you think of what you have done all through your life. So the mental situation at the time of death will carry you to the different form of life as your mental situation.
After the destruction of this gross body, the subtle body carries me to another gross body. We have got practical experience. Just like from a rose garden, the flavor is carried by the air, transferred to another place. In this life, whatever our mental creation, that will be carried in the next life, and according to that, nature will give us a body.
If we think of dog, maybe we are transferred to the dog's body. If I think of God, then I shall be transferred to a god's body. So we have scattered our love for so many things in the material world. We have to collect everything and transfer everything for loving God.
This Krsna consciousness movement is for educating people how to think of God constantly. And if we practice like that, then, after giving up this body, we are going to get a body which is exactly like God. This body is called sac-cid-ananda.
In our next segment, we'll consider the sastric citations offered throughout Srila Prabhupada's five lectures on SB 1.1.2, and his general emphasis on aspects of the sloka.
