Don't Allow this Miniskirt or Minishirt

BY: MADHAVANANDA DAS

Jul 05, 2010 — FLORIDA, USA (SUN) — I just skimmed through the video on the 09' Kuli Mela Festival. I saw a nice devotional type of performance near the end, however from the beginning and quite a ways on, I thought I was watching the MTV music awards. Women were dressed very promiscuously and several dances were very risque, practically naked type of dances. Am I just not enough of a hipster, or is something wrong with this picture? I see the same type of thing at Ratha Yatra festivals these days, where girls are out in public dressed in a very revealing manner.

Sure this is natural, everyone wants to be attractive, but for a spiritual society this is not at all what Srila Prabhupada has instructed. Prabhupada has said no miniskirts and no minishirts. I heard him say this in a recording, which I believe was the first marriage ceremony he performed for devotees. And I see a very obvious difference in the way things were, when you watch the videos of Srila Prabhupada and the devotees. You do not see any girls in those videos dressed this way. All the girls have themselves fully covered. Nowadays I've seen even married women wearing these minishirts and short dresses. Why should a married woman be dressed in such a way to attract other men?

Kali Yuga is just out of control, isn't it? Perhaps most of the mataji's in our society are dressing respectably. As for the rest, what can be done? We as parents as, teachers, as devotees and leaders have to try our best to set the right standard.

Don't allow this miniskirt or minishirt. According to Vedic civilization, respectable woman cannot be seen even by the sun. (Wedding Ceremony, Boston, May 6 1969)

Kasyapa Muni advised his wife not to go out onto the street unless she was well decorated and well dressed. He did not encourage the miniskirts that have now become fashionable. In Oriental civilization, when a woman goes out onto the street, she must be fully covered so that no man will recognize who she is. All these methods are to be accepted for purification. If one takes to Krsna consciousness, one is fully purified, and thus one remains always transcendental to the contamination of the material world. (Srimad Bhagavatam 6.18.50)
