Sri Chaitanya May 17, 2022 — CANADA (SUN) — A serial presentation of Shri Krishna Chaitanya-carita Mahakavya, written by Shrila Murari Gupta (1513 A.D.). Translation into English by Bhaktivedanta Bhagavata Swami. FIRST PRAKRAMA sa-candana gandham ananya-saurabha / janash ca sarve jahur jagur muda 1 tatah - then; dvijebhyah - unto the brahmanas; pradadau - He gave; muhuh muhuh - again and again; pugani - betel nuts; malyani - garlands; ca - and; gandhavanti - fragrant; sa-candanam - with sandalwood; gandham - scents; ananya-saurabham - incomparable fragrance; janah - the people; ca - and; sarve - all; jahuh - rejoiced; jaguh - sang; muda - in bliss. Then the Lord gave to each and every member of the twice-born, chewing pan with spices and a fragrant flower garland. Then He anointed them with pulp of sandal and scented oils of matchless fragance. All the people exultantly sang out of gladness.
jamatara gandha-sugandhi-malyai / shubhadhivasa vidadhe samarcya tam 2 sah - He; vallabhah - Vallabha _carya; abhyetya - arrived; su-mangalaih - with very auspicious; dvijaih - brahmanas; naraih - with men; ca - and; bhu-deva - brahmanas; pati-vrata - chaste wives; adibhih - and others; jamataram - son-in -law; gandha - scents; su-gandhi-malyaih - very fragrant garlands; shubha - resplendent; adhivasam - marriage rituals; vidadhe - he bestowed; samarcya - having honored; tam - Him. Shri Vallabha _carya came with saintly brahmanas, accompanied by their chaste wives and others. He worshipped his son-in-law by offering Him scented oils and fragrant garlands.
harih samabhyarcya pitn suradin / nandimukha-shraddham athakarot dvijaih 3 atha - then; prabhate - dawn; vimale - clear; arune - reddening arke - when the sun; svayam - Himself; kta-snana-vidhih - took His bath according to scripture; yathavat - correctly; harih - Gaura Hari; samabhyarcya - having worshipped; pitn - the forefathers; sura-adin - the godly controllers and others; nandi-mukha-shraddham - ceremony to benefit ancestors in a diseased condition; atha - then; akarot - did; dvijaih - with the brahmanas. Then at dawn when the clear sky was reddened by the rising sun, Gaura Hari took His bath according to the guidance of scripture, and with the assistance of brahmanas He ritually honored His forefathers and offered them oblations to relieve them of any distress. He also offered oblations to the gods and to all godly beings.
varanganavakt-saroja-mangalo- / jjvala-svanair avavdhe mahotsavah 4 tatah - then; dvijanam - of the brahmanas; yajuam - of the Yajur Veda; su-nisvanaih - with pleasant sounds; mdanga - clay drum; bheri - kettledrum; pataha - tabor drum; adi - and others; naditaih - with sounds; vara-angana - beautiful women; vaktra - mouth; saroja - lotus; mangala - auspicious; ujjvala - effulgent; svanaih - with sounds; avavdhe - flourished; mahotsavah - the festival. Then a great festival flourished throughout the day as the pleasing vibrations of the brahmanas intoning mantras from the Yajur Veda combined with the rhythmic beats of mdangas, kettle drums, tabors and other drums, as well as the charming and auspicious sounds of ululating from the lotus-like lips of the lovely ladies.
uvaca ki bhart-vihinaya maya / kartavyam evatra bhavad-vidhaih svayam 5 shaci - Shaci Devi; su-sapujya - having nicely worshipped; kula-striyam - ladies of the family; muda - with delight; tatra - there; agatan - having come; bandu-janan - male relatives; ca - and; sarvashah - by all manner; uvaca - said; kim - what?; bhart-vihinaya - by being bereft of my husband; maya - by me; kartavyam - should be done; eva - indeed; atra - here; bhavat-vidhaih - by such persons as you; svayam - yourselves. Shaci Devi joyously welcomed the ladies of her family as well as the gentlemen in every way she could. She requested of them, "How can I, a poor widow, perform this wedding alone? Kindly assist me by doing all that requires to be done."
mukta-phala-sthulatarashru-bindun / uvaha vakah sthala-hara-vibhraman 6 sva-matuh - of His mother; ittham - thus; karuna-anvitam - doleful; vacah - words; nishamya - hearing; tatam - dear father; paritapta - very anguished; cittah - mind; mukta-phala - pearls; sthulatara - bigger; ashru-bindun - tear drops; uvaha - made a flow; vakah - chest; sthala - mound; hara - necklace; vibhraman - illusion. Hearing such pitiable words from His mother, Gaura Hari's mind became much distressed by thoughts of His dear father, and from His eyes tear-drops larger than pearls fell upon the mounds of His chest, making the illusion of a necklace.
pitah katha mangala-karmani svayam / amangala vari vimuncase dshoh 7 nirikya - seeing; putram - her son; karuna-anvitam - sorrowful; shaci - Shri Shaci Devi; su-vismita - very mystified; praha - said; pati-vrata - women dedicated to their husband; adibhih - and others; pitah - O father; katham - how?; mangala-karmani - during an auspicious event; svayam - Yourself; amangalam - inauspicious; vari - water; vimuncase - You are releasing; dshoh - from the eyes. Standing amongst the chaste women, Shaci Devi became struck with wonder, to see her son so sorrowful. "O father Nimai," she said, "On this auspicious occasion, why do You let these inauspicious tears fall from Your eyes?"
sa matur samipa prativacam adade / navina gambhira-ghana-svana yatha 8 sah - He; matuh - of His mother; ittham - thus; vacanam - words; nipiya - reproaching; pit - father; smti - remembrance; shvasa - sighs; malimasa - darkened; ananah - face; matuh - of His mother; samipam - nearby; prativacam - reply; adade - gave; navina - new; gambhira - deep; ghana - cloud; svanam - sound; yatha - as. Nimai sighed, His face became dark by remembrance of His father, and He reproached His mother for these words. Standing by her, He replied in a deep voice, resounding like a water-laden cloud newly arrived in the sky.
tvayadya dineva parashraya yatah / pita mamadarshanatam agad iti 9 dhanani - wealth; va - or; me - My; manujah - men; ca - and; matah - O mother!; na - not; santi - they are; kim - whether?; yena - by which; vacah - words; samiritam - uttered; tvaya - by you; adya - today; dina - lowly; iva - like; parashrayam - shelter for others; yatah - whence; pita - father; mama - my; adarshanatam - not visible; agat - gone; iti - thus. "O Mother, do you speak today as if distressed because I have no wealth and followers, or is it rather because My father, who gave shelter to others, is no longer visible to our eyes?
vara-traya datum ananya-saram / sarvanga-samlepana-yogya-gandham 10 tvaya - by you; eva - surely; dtam - seen; dvija-sajjanebhyah - to the saintly brahmanas; su-puga-purnani - full of good betel; ca - and; bhajanani - receptacles; vara-trayam - three times; datum - to give; ananya-saram - incomparable essence; sarva-anga - all the body; samlepana - anointed; yogya - suitable; gandham - scented oils. "You saw the pots filled with fine betelnut given thrice to the saintly brahmanas and how they were all anointed with fragrant oils.
amartya-karyeu mamasti shaktis / tathapi loka-carita karomi 11 anyeu - amongst others; yogyeu - suitable; ca - and; su-vyayah - much expense; yat - which; tattvam - truth; vijanasi - you know; yatha yatha- each and every; ishtam - desired; amartya-karyeu - in immortal duties; mama - my; asti - it is; shaktih - energy; tathapi - still; loka - people; caritam - character; karomi - I perform. "You know how much wealth was spent on other deserving persons and how I satisfied their every desire. Truly My real power lies in spiritual duties, yet still I am acting in this way to show an exemplary character for all people.
itirita tasya nishamya mata / ta shantayitva madhurair vacobhih 12 pitra - by My father; vihinah - without; aham - I; agadha-shaktih - unfathomable power; tathapi - still; matuh - of My mother; vacasa - by the words; dunomi - I am consumed with sorrow; iti - thus; iritam - spoken; tasya - His; nishamya - hearing; mata - mother; tam - Him; shantayitva - having consoled; madhuraih - with sweet; vacobhih - words. "Although bereft of My father, I possess unfathomable power. Still, dear mother, I am filled with sorrow to hear you speak such words." Hearing this, His mother consoled Him sweetly.
shri-gaura-candra jagad-eka-bandhu / strina mano-jna rucita sma yena 13 sa-candanair aguru-sara-gandhaih / samalipan putram adina-shraddhah tada kumarah pthivi-suranam / samagatah puruarabha shubhe 14 prasadhanaih - with ornaments; ashuka - garments; ratna-yugmai - with jewels; vibhuayam asuh - they ornamented; anarghya - invaluable; malyaih - garlands; shri-gaura-candram - Lord Gaura Candra; jagat-eka-bandhum - the sole friend of all living beings; strinam - of women; mana-jnam - charming; rucitam - pleasing; sma - was; yena - by which; sa-candanaih - with sandalwood pulp; aguru-sara-gandhaih - with the fragrant oil of aguru; samalipan - anointing; putram - son; adina - noble; shraddhah - faithful; tada - then; kumarah - sons; pthivi-suranam - of the brahmanas; samagatah - assembled; purua-abham - the best of males; shubhe - on that glorious occasion. At that auspicious moment, noble and faithful brahmanas's sons assembled to anoint Gaura Candra, that best among males, whose attractive luster was enchanting to the womenfolk, with the pulp of sandal and oil of aguru. They adorned the only friend of all living beings with silken cloths embroidered by jewels, as well as garlands of choice flowers and precious necklaces.
samapya kanya vara-hema-gauri / vibhuitam abharanaih sa cakre 15 tasmin kane - at that moment; vallabha-mishra-varyah - the venerable brahmana, Vallabha _carya; karyam - duty; pitnam - of the forefathers; atha - then; devatanam - of the demigods; samapya - completing; kanyam - daughter; vara - valuable; hema-gaurim - shone like white gold; vibhuitam - decorated; abharanaih - with ornaments; sah - he; cakre - made. At that moment, the venerable Vallabhacarya's duty to his forefathers and to the devatas, concerning his daughter were complete. His daughter Lakshmi had been decorated with ornaments and her complexion shone with a luster like precious white gold.
ucush ca te mangala-purvam ashu / shubhaya yatra kuru sama-ghoaih 16 tatah - then; dvijan - the brahmanas; anayane - bringing near; varenyan - excellent; varasya - of the bridegroom; sapreitavan - invited; sametya - having met; ucuh - they said; ca - and; te - to you; mangala-purvam - attended by auspiciousness; ashu - quickly; shubhaya - for auspiciousness; yatram - festive procession; kuru - do; sama-ghoaih - with utterances from the Sama Veda. Then he brought the exalted brahmanas, whom he had invited, and after introducing them to the bridegroom, the brahmanas said, "To invoke auspiciousness let us immediately start the festive procession with hymns from the Sama-Veda."
pradipta-dipavalibhir niketana / mishrasya haima shikhara shivo yatha 17 svayam - Himself; harih - Lord Hari; vipra-varasya - belonging to the best of the vipras; sat-janaih - with the good men; manuya-yane - on the palanquin; jaya-nisvanaih - by the sounds of victory; yayau - he went; pradipta-dipa-avalibhih - with the lines of blazing torches; niketanam - home; mishrasya - of the Mishra; haimam - covered with ice; shikharam - mountain peak; shivah - Lord Shiva; yatha - just as. Then, just as Shiva went with Parvati to be wed on a golden peak of Mount Sumeru, Gaura Hari went to the _carya's home in a palanquin carried by godly men engaged by Vallabhacarya. All the gentlemen called, "Jaya! Jaya!" and lit the way with blazing torches.
padyadina gandha-varashu-malyair / dhupais tathaivaguru-sara-yuktaih 18 tatah - then; abhigamya - arriving; ashramam - place for spiritual development; atmanah - own; nayan - leading; mishrah - Shri Mishra; svayam - heart-felt; varayam babhuva - He welcomed; padya-adina - with offerings of padya (footwash), etc.; gandha-vara - excellent scents; ashu-malyaih - with lustrous garlands; dhupaih - with incense; tatha eva - and certainly; aguru-sara-yuktaih - with oil of aguru. When they arrived at his ashrama, the _carya himself ushered in Shri Gauranga and giving Him a heart-felt welcome. He bathed the Lord's feet, offered valuable gifts, poured refreshing spiced water to sip, adorned Him with fragrant flower garlands interwoven with gold tinsel, and burned incense scented with aguru.
pratapta-cami-kara-rocia lasat / sumeru-shuddhojjvala-deha-yatih 19 babhau - He shone; varah - the bridegroom; purna-nishakara - the full moon; prabha - effulgence; jita-smara - defeating Cupid; smera - smiling; mukhena - by His face; rocia - by the brightness; pratapta - glowing; cami-kara - gold; rocia - by His effulgence; lasat - shining; su-meru - Mount Meru; shuddha - pure; ujjvala - blazing; deha - body; yatih - slender. The golden luminescence of the bridegroom's smiling face shone with the brightness of the full moon, defeating Cupid, and His slender body was as brilliant as Mount Sumeru.
analpa-kalpa-drumam ashu vyahanat / samashritanam abhilaa-do harih 20 kara-dvayena - with two hands; angada - bangles; kankana - bracelets; anguli - rings; virajitena - with shining; abja - lotus; tala - palms; abhishobhina - very beautified; analpa - not small (great); kalpa-drumam - desire tree; ashu - soon; vyahanat - defeated; samashritanam - of those fully surrendered; abhilaa-dah - fulfiller of desires; harih - Lord Hari. His hands with beautiful lotus palms glittered with rings, bracelets and bangles, defeating the opulence of a forest of desire trees, for Shri Hari fulfills the desires of all those who surrender unto Him.
svalankta sadhu dadau jagad-guroh / pade 'bhireje 'tha tayor abhikhya 21 sutam - son; samaniya - bringing; nishakara-prabham - moon-like effulgence; prabha - illumination; vinidhvanta - destroyed; tamah - darkness; samagram - completely; su-alanktam - nicely decorated; sadhu - well; dadau - he gave; jagat-guroh - of the guru of all sentient beings; pade - to the feet; abhireje - brightly shone; atha - then; tayoh - of those two; abhikhya - beauty. The moon-like luster of Shri Vallabha's nicely ornamented daughter dispelled all darkness. Leading her forward, he offered her at the feet of the guru of all the worlds. Thus joined together, that couple's beauty shone forth most effulgently.
pupoatuh pupa-cayair asincata / paraspara tau hara-parvativa 22 tayoh - of those two; mukha-induh - moon-face; samara - meeting; ujjvala - brilliant; shriya - by the opulence; sa-rohini - with the star Rohini; candra - the moon; samah - like; su-shobham - very beautiful; pupoatuh - they nourished; pupa-cayaih - with heaps of flowers; asincatam - they sprinkled; parasparam - on one another; tau - they two; hara-parvati - Lord Shiva and Parvati; iva - like. When the brilliant opulence of those two luminous faces met, their sublime splendor brought to mind the conjunction of the moon with the auspicious star Rohini. Then, like Shiva and Parvati, they took delight in showering one another with heaps of flowers.
puras tato 'bhyetya shucih samavishad / datu sa kanya vidhina vidhana-vit 23 atha - then; upavite - seated; kamala - Lakshmi; adhinathe - the Supreme Lord; lakmih - Lakmi Devi; ca - and; tatra - there; upavivesha - sat; hri-yuta - with shyness; purah - before; tatah - then; abhyetya - approaching; shucih - pure; samavishat - he approached; datum - to give; sah - he; kanyam - daughter; vidhina - according to shastra; vidhana-vit - the knower of the shastra. The Lord of Lakshmi was seated, and Lakshmi also shyly sat down. Then after purifying himself by acamana, Vallabhacarya, who was well conversant with Vedic precepts, approached the Lord to ritually present his daughter to Him.
tatraiva padya vidadhe sa vallabho / nakha-dyuti-dhvanta-tamah-samuhe 24 yasya - whose; anghri-padme - at the lotus feet; vinivedya - having offered; padyam - a footwash; praja-patih - Brahma; prapa - received; jagat-siskam - the determination to create; tatra - there; eva - indeed; padyam - footwash; vidadhe - performed; sah - He; vallabhah - Vallabha _carya; nakha - nails; dyuti - light; dhvanta - darkness; tamah - ignorance; samuhe - accumulation. In ancient times Shri Brahma washed those lotus feet. Thus he attained the intelligence for universal creation. Now Shri Vallabha bathed those same feet. The _carya desired to eradicate the darkness in his heart by taking shelter of Vishvambhara's dazzling toe-nails.
tasmai sa kausheya-suvishtarasanam / dadau nipita vara-pita-vasase 25 yasmai - unto whom; maha-indrah - Lord Indra; adhi-npa-asanam - seat of the emperor; dadau - he gave; sa-ratna - with jewels; siha-asana - lion seat; kambala-vtam - covered with a blanket; tasmai - unto Him; sah - he; kausheya - silk; su-vishtara-asanam - very nice seat; dadau - he gave; nipitam - drank in; vara-pita-vasase - in a beautiful yellow garment. When Gaura appeared in a former avatara, the great Indra once presented Him his own imperial lion-throne, bedecked with gems and the royal blanket. Now Shri Vallabha offered a regal seat of silk to that same Lord, Shri Gauranga Hari, who was dressed in splendid yellow garments. Then he drank the beauty of the Lord through his eyes.
ktva ktajnah pradadau hareh kare / kanya samutsjya saroja-locanam 26 kramena - one after the other; sah - he; arghya-adikam - valuable gifts, etc.; eva - certainly; karma-vidhanatah - according to the standard of that work; hara - jubilation; tanu-ruha-udgamaih - by standing up of his hairs; ktva - did; kta-jnah - grateful; pradadau - bestowed; hareh - of Lord Hari; kare - in the hand; kanyam - daughter; samutsjya - releasing; saroja-locanam - lotus-eyed. He honored the Lord according to the Vedic process of etiquette, beginning with the offering of arghya (hand-wash) and so forth and the hairs of his body stood erect out of bliss. Feeling very grateful to Him, Vallabha placed the hand of his lotus-eyed daughter in the hand of Shri Hari.
vishvambharo vishva-bhararti-ha vibhuh / manuya-yanair anujabhinandit-ah 27 tatah - then; nivtte - finished; ati-mahotsave - the great festival; shubhe - blissful; lakmim - Lakmi Devi; samadaya - bringing; nijam - own; purim - abode; yayau - He went; vishvambharah - Lord Vishvambhara; vishva - of the universe; bhara-arti-ha - destroyer of the burden; vibhuh - sense-controlled, all-pervasive; manuya-yanaih - on palanquins; manuja-abhinanditah - cheered by the people. When that great and joyous festival ended, the all-pervasive and sense-controlled Lord Vishvambhara, who takes away the burden of material existence from all the worlds, brought Lakshmi Devi to His home. They rode on palanquins and were applauded by the townsfolk. Thus ends the Tenth Sarga entitled "Festivities at Gaura's Wedding," in the First Prakrama of the great poem Shri Chaitanya Carita.
