Many devotees are outsiders to Krsna consciousness now. We haven't lived in temples for decades in a monastic setting, so many of Srila Prabhupada's letters that are cited to promote Tulsi Gabbard's campaign don't exactly apply to their individual situations today. Many estranged devotees didn't follow their religious vows. They went on with their lives, while pretending for decades they represented something for others to follow, that they had rejected or at least questioned.
What some did is create their own spiritual path, mixing in New Age ideas with a little bhakti yoga that they gleaned from their temple days, but without strict rules compromising their principles. Just like all the outsiders of Krsna consciousness do, claiming all that's necessary is a little singing of holy names and a vegetarian diet. A higher taste will naturally develop, they argue, and gradually even without any effort their illicit desires will fall away. Many took advantage though, and turned the Krsna consciousness movement into a business, setting up non-profit organizations for themselves and families, convincing society to pay their way, while they lived tax free, even though in actuality they stood for nothing. Worse are the ones who twisted Srila Prabhupada's teachings designed to specifically instruct bhakti yoga principles, to instead endorse Tulsi Gabbard's 2020 political campaign, claiming it synonymous with spreading Krsna consciousness. They argue, misapplying Srila Prabhupada's teachings, that her abortion lawmaking should be excused as a "side issue", pretending Srila Prabhupada made an exception for Tulsi Gabbard's demonic activities, by deliberate omission. Just because Srila Prabhupada said not to support politicians AGAINST abortion, doesn't mean he's giving you permission to promote Tulsi Gabbard who passed laws FOR it. They also falsely promoted her as a empowered Vaishnavi, trained from birth, to win a political election, even though in reality she's just a Hawaiian girl with a devotee name.
But, the most despicable of all are those who creatively made up statements that Prabhupada never said, that there's no evidence written or recorded to reference, implicating Srila Prabhupada in their schemes, misusing their good names and reputation as Srila Prabhupada's earliest disciples, to aid Tulsi's campaign.

Isn't it amazing how Srila Prabhupada apparently prophesied Tulsi Gabbard's 2020 presidential campaign, and surprise, surprise! Nobody's ever heard of his important prediction before 2019. There's no evidence Srila Prabhupada ever said this. You'll just have to accept that he did though, because Govinda dasi says so. She would never lie to you, now would she? And, there'll be lots more made up stories just like this one in her upcoming memories book. Nanda Kumar apparently has one on the way too. Have they no shame?
