Month Long Kartik celebrations at ISKCON Mayapur
The devotees of ISKCON Mayapur have lined up a series of festivals and events to celebrate the month of Kartik. It is mentioned in established scriptures like Purans that the month of Kartik is considered the most auspicious month and austerities performed to satisfy Lord Vishnu during this period can wash away all sins performed over millions of births and one may become eligible to be cut off the repeated cycle of birth, death, disease and old age. The devotees of ISKCON Mayapur will be celebrating the sacred month of Kartik with a series of programmes spread over the entire month, which will begin from 5th October and continue till 4th November.
As per the Gaudiya Vaishnav philosophy this month is also known as Damodar month and holds special importance as during this time the mischievous little Krsna while performing His sweet childhood pastimes, better known as Bal Lila, was tied by a rope ( dam) on His waist ( udar) by mother Yashoda for breaking the pot filled with butter. For all 30 days of the month every evening the entire temple compound is nicely illuminated by hundreds of devotees who offer Deepdan and recite Damodarashtakam as congregational prayer. Besides this lectures glorifying the pastimes of Lord Krsna are being delivered throughout the day part at various places within ISKCON campus. It is believed that the sanctity of Mayapur, Lord Sri Chaitanya MahaPrabhu's birth place is non-different from Vrindavan so hundreds of devotees across the world have gathered for Parikrama of Navadwipa Mandala scheduled from 18thOct-25th Nov. Any austerity performed in the holy Dham during this time gives magnified results.
On 20th October the devotees will perform Govardhan puja and celebrate it as a festival to commemorate the day as when Lord Krsna lifted the Govardhan hill on His small finger and held it for 7 consecutive days to save the denizens of Vrindavan from the wrath of Indradev. Later Krsna had instructed all the Vrajavasis to worship the Govardhan hill and offer sumptuous delicacies to satisfy. Following the same tradition the devotees perform Maha-abishek and prepare delicious varieties of luchi, laddus, kheer, sabzis and many more and offer it as bhog. MahaPrasadam will be distributed to all the devotees.
23rd October will be observed as the divine disappearance day of HDG AC Bhaktivedanta Swami Srila Prabhupad, founder Acharya of ISKCON. Senior devotees will pay homage to Srila Prabhupad and remember his pastimes. Emotions of melancholy yet happiness flow during the gathering at Prabhupad Samadhi. A prolific ambassador of Sanatana Dharma who spread the Indian culture and values all across the globe, Srila Prabhupad has gifted the festivals to the entire world and today in all 650 centres of ISKCON they are celebrated with equal zeal and fervour added Sri Madhava Gauranga das, Vice Chairman Mayapur Administrative Council.
The devotees will observe Bhishma Panchak Vrata from 31st Oct to 4th Nov, Kartik Poornima day, and thus the month will come to an end.
