Manipur Handloom Fair

Aug 28, IMPHAL, INDIA (SANGAI EXPRESS) — The Janmastami Festival Fair, 2005, a unique handloom and handicraft fair has commenced from today at ISKCON complex, Ghari, Airport Road. The fair which would continue for one week is being organised by State Commerce and Industries Department under the sponsorship of Development Commissioner for Handloom, Ministry of Textiles, Government of India.

Commerce and Industries Minister N mangi Singh, Principal Secretary (Commerce and Industries) PC Lamkunga and International Director of ISKCON Bhaktiswarupa Damudara Swami Shri Pada attended the inaugural function of the fair as chief guest, president and guest of honour respectively.

Speaking at the occasion, Damudara Swami observed that handloom and handicraft sector is an important component of the State economy and special attention should be paid to this sector for the development of the economy.

Stating that organising such fairs at ISKCON is one of his cherished dream, he also appealed to all the people to come and take part in the fair irrespective of their caste, creed or religion.

In his address as chief guest of the function, Commerce and Industries Minister N Mangi said that the fair is being organised to coincide with Janmastami, birth day of Lord Krishna, which is being celebrated all over the world tomorrow.

It would provide an opportunity to showcase the exquisite handloom and handicraft products of the State to the people who would also be coming to witness the fair from other places.

The Minister assured efforts would also be made to organise such fairs during Christmas, Id, Yaoshang and Ningol Chakkouba festivals.

In all 50 stalls including 10 REGP units of KVIC, Imphal are taking parts and displaying their products at the fair.
