The dark side of the nine-day glittering Rath Yatra came to the fore after a woman slapped a police officer for molesting women during darshan of Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra and Goddess Subhadra in a jam-packed Gundicha Temple on Sunday evening.

The woman, who is a medical student in Bhubaneswar, posted the ordeal of women in Gundicha Temple on her Facebook account. "I was furious seeing the policemen touching women inappropriately on the pretext of crowd management. When one of the policemen came and touched my back, I dragged him holding his collar. I slapped him thrice in front of several other police personnel and people," she posted.

"I also brought it to the notice of the Puri SP. It was shocking to expect such type of misconduct from police personnel, who were there for safety of devotees and crowd management," her Facebook post read.

When contacted, the medical student said she and her father visited Gundicha Temple to catch last glimpse of the Deities on the occasion of Sandhya Darshan. "There was maddening rush inside the temple. We stood in long queue. I saw some police personnel molesting women. I was shocked that such incidents happened before God," said the student.

She refused to lodge any complaint with the police. "I just wanted to raise my voice," she said. Contacted, additional Director General of Police (Headquarters) Satyajit Mohanty said an inquiry already started. "We are aware of the woman's Facebook post. The SP is inquiring into her allegations," Mohanty said.

In 2008 Rath Yatra, some Japanese tourists were molested in the crowd on Grand Road during pulling of chariots. Two days ago, the B. J. Das judicial commission, set up to recommend reforms in Jagannath Temple, said a number of women were misbehaved by some servitors inside the Jagannath Temple in the past.

Over 4 lakh pilgrims visited the Gundicha Temple on Sunday to catch the last glimpse of the Jagannath Temple Deities, Who had been holidaying in Gundicha Temple since June 25 Rath Yatra.
