India is a Very Dangerous Place for Women

BY: A CONCERNED PARTY

Feb 8, INDIA (SUN) — I agree with Anonymous who wrote the piece, "Don't Send Your Kids to India". The west, for the most part, provides a safe and progressive environment for women. India does not.

The phenomena of what Indians refer to as "eve teasing" (a polite euphemism for what it actual is - sexual harassment), has reached epidemic proportions on the streets of small and big towns alike. Ask any Indian woman who grew up in India about this. We all have experiences with what again is called "roadside Romeos", another polite euphemism for "sexual predator".

This is definitely a cultural issue that we are grappling with. So many articles and op-ed pieces have already been written, so many women's groups are coming out and protesting. We are yet to get laws enforced. Ours is a culture of repression and denial and that is why these things are allowed to fester in society.

India is not safe even for Indian women, what to speak of foreign women who may not be aware of it's dangers and thus naively come to trust local men and boys.

Parents, please be aware of this. Women, please proceed with caution.
