Aug 27, USA (SUN) Last night's Janmastami program at the ISKCON Portland temple in Hillsboro was a tremendous success. More than 200 devotees filled the temple, coming to take darshan of Their Lordships at 6:30 p.m., and continuing to arrive all throughout the evening. Fortunately the weather was warm and fair, as the crowd eventually spilled out of the temple entrance way and into the parking lot.
Dhananjaya dasa and his wife did an excellent job of organizing the program, with the help of many devotees who worked diligently throughout the evening receiving bhoga preparations, attending the altar, and arranging for the various performances. Rocana dasa led kirtan from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. while guests came for darshan and prasadam facilities were set-up outside. A busload of devotees arrived from Corvalis bearing dish after dish of bhoga preparations for the Lord. A constant stream of offerings were made to Sri Sri Radha Krsna and Sri Sri Gaura-Nitai as the devotees chanted and danced.
At 9:00, we were treated to a dance performance by the children, after which maha-abhishekh was performed. The devotees continued with ecstatic kirtan as a long line formed for the abhishekh. Maha-prasad caranamrta was distributed throughout the evening and blissfully enjoyed by all, and prasadam was made available for those not fasting until midnight.
Next we enjoyed a delightful drama of Lord Krsna in his childhood pastime with the fruit seller. This was followed by a beautiful candle-lit Jula to Laddu Gopal, during which Dhananjaya prabhu led us in very sweet devotional bhajans.
As midnight approached, a maha-aarti was offered, and ecstatic chanting and dancing filled the temple room. With kartal, mrdanga and conches resounding, Lord Sri Krsna and Srimati Radharani were gloriously offered worship by all.
Afterwards, a sumptuous prasadam feast was arranged for the devotees, with endless preparations coming to the tables for everyone to savour. By the mercy of Lord Sri Krsna and his pure devotee, A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Srila Prabhupada, the Krsna Janmastami festival elevated everyone present to a transcendental mood.
