The Holy Places of Jaiva Dharma: Radha-kunda

Jun 11, 2014 — CANADA (SUN) — A serial presentation of the holy places mentioned in the Jaiva Dharma of Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakur - Part 114.

At the heart of all Radha-kunda's glories is Srimati Radharani Herself. With Her gopi friends, and with Her pet swan Tundikeri, She is fond of swimming in Radha-kunda. Many divine pastimes with Sri Krsna are also Her pleasure here. In the Priti-sandarbha, Srila Jiva Goswami establishes the transcendental supremacy of this holy place:

    "Padma Purana, Karttika-mahatmya:

    yatha radha priya vishnos
    tasyah kundam priyam tatha
    sarva-gopishu saivaika
    vishnor atyanta-vallabha

"Just as Srimati Radharani is dear to the Supreme Lord Krishna (Vishnu), so Her bathing place (Radha-kunda) is equally dear to Krishna. Among all the gopis, She alone stands supreme as the Lord's most beloved."

    (Priti-sandarbha, Vol. 1)

All the Vaisnavas pray to worship the Supreme Couple at Radha-kunda, as stated by Srila Visvanath Cakravarti Thakur in his Sankalpa Kalpa Drumah:

"He Devi ! When on the banks of Your favourite bathing place, Radha Kund, You sit with Your Dearmost on a swing, beautifully decorated with varieties of fresh flowers, I will swing You, scatter the pollen of fragrant flowers upon You, sing songs and play the Vina to entertain You. (51)

Oh You who are comparable to Srimati Radhika Herself. I will reside on Your banks and worship You at the proper times. Oh Radha Kunda ! By drinking Your waters may my hopes and aspirations in the form of a creeper be nourished and bear fruits and flowers." (100)

Likewise, Srila Raghunatha dasa Goswami gives this glorification in Vilapa-kusumanjali:

"O Radha-kunda, pond of sublime joy, my mistress Srimati Radhika is always absorbed in divine amorous pastimes with her beloved paramour Sri Krsna on your banks, and you have endeared yourself to this Divine Couple more than anything else They cherish. Please, therefore, be merciful upon me and allow me but a moment's vision of the object of my greatest adoration, Srimati Radharani."

The importance of Sri Radhakunda is specially celebrated during the month of Kartika. In the Padma Purana there is a description of the glories of Kartik month, mentioning that this Radha Kunda, situated near the Gurkadan mountain, is very dear to Lord Krsna is. If one wants to please Lord Hari or becomes His beloved, he should bathe in Radha Kunda during the month of Kartik. Being as dear to Krsna as Radha herself, it is the duty of devotees to take bath in Radha Kunda during Kartik and thereafter to worship Janardana. This simple program of worship requires only one day and pleases Sri Krsna more than the worship of Jnardana or Urthana ekadashi.

In the Bhakti Ratnakara, Sri Narahari Dasa describes the glories of Radha Kunda and Shyama Kunda:

"Whoever bathes in Radha Kunda and Shyama Kunda gets the glorified results of performing Rajasuya-ashwamedhea Yajna."

And the Padma Purana states:

"O brahmanas, a person who during the month of Karttika, on the Bahulashtami, day bathes in Radha-kunda, which is by beautiful Govardhana Hill and which is very dear to Lord Krishna, becomes a great devotee. He is very pleasing to Lord Krishna."
