Detail from a temple in Naimisharanya

Jan 11, 2016 — CANADA (SUN) — The last in a serial exploration of Naimisharanya tirtha..

Tonight we conclude our series on the Holy Dhama of Naimisharanya. Just as all things begin and end with Sri Krsna, so this series will close on the topic of Krsna, whose association with Naimisharanya comes by way of the Brahmavaivarta Purana.

Brahmavaivarta is considered a Rajasika Purana, being one of the six Mahapuranas. It is often described as a glorification of Lord Brahma, but actually the Brahmavaivarta glorifies Lord Krsna, along with the Trimurti personalities who function on His behalf.

The Brahmavaivarta Purana was recited by Souti, the son of Lomaharshana, to an assembly of great sages at Naimisharanya. Souti explained to the assembly that this Purana was first recited by Sri Krsna to Brahma, who then recited it to his son Dharma at the Holy Dhama of Pushkar. Dharma recited it to the sage Narayana, who recited it to Narada Muni, who in turn gave it to Srila Vedavyasa. Lomaharshana, Souti's father, was the disciple of Vedavyasa. Lomaharshana learned the Purana from his Spiritual Master, and in turn recited it to his son, Souti.

The Brahmavaivarta Purana is comprised of 18,000 slokas, divided into four sections, or khandas. The first section, entitled Brahma Khanda, deals extensively with creation. Next is the Prakriti Khanda, which deals with the goddesses who are manifestations of Prakriti. The third section, Ganesh Khanda, is about Ganesh. The last section, which describes the Supreme Personality, is entitled Sri Krishna Janma Khanda.

Where Krsna goes, Srimati Radharani is always there, and in the case of Brahmavaivarta Purana, Radha is described in the Prakriti Khanda along with Saraswati Devi, Laksmi Devi, Savitri Devi, and Durga Ma.

Brahmavaivarta Purana describes the life and pastimes of Sri Krsna's Braj lila, Mathura lila, reunion with Radha, and the migration of the residents of Gokul to Gokula, along with a description of the degradation of Kali yuga. Following is an excerpt of that great Purana heard by the sages at Sri Naimisharanya Dhama.
