The Demoniac Character of Politics and Politicians in Kali-yuga

BY: MAYESVARA DAS

Nov 15, 2011 — OJAI, CALIFORNIA, USA (SUN) —

This is a little long, but the following quotations from Srila Prabhupada provide a transcendental perspective on the recent protests against corrupt government, banks and corporations. It also contains a warning from Prabhupada regarding coming events in the Kali-yuga.

AT THE PRESENT TIME, THE DEMONS AND RAKSASAS HAVE TAKEN CHARGE OF THE PLANET EARTH

At the present, especially on this planet earth, the influence of Lord Brahmä has decreased considerably, and the representatives of Hiranyakasipu—the Raksasas and demons—have taken charge. Therefore there is no protection of brahminical culture and cows, which are the basic prerequisites for all kinds of good fortune. This age is very dangerous because society is being managed by demons and Raksasas." (SB 7.3.13)

YOU CAN KNOW THIS WORLD IS NOW MANAGED BY DEMONS

Räkñasa  means almost man-eaters. Räkñasa are called man-eaters, more than tigers. They, for their self-satisfaction, they can eat, I mean to say, even, even their own sons. You see? They are called räkñasas. No shame. "My sense gratification should be satisfied. Never mind. You go to hell." So this is the age. So we, we create a machine that everyone comes and becomes smashed in that machine, and my sense satisfaction is there. Although I'll never be happy by that sense satisfaction. This is going on. You can know this world is now managed by the räkñasas. Räkñasa. They don't mind what is happening. They are prepared to sacrifice everything for fulfilling their whimsical nonsense. They are called räkñasa. Räkñasém äsuréà caiva prakåtià mohinéà çritäù.  Why they are? Now, they are very much enamored by this material beauty. Not beauty. The material civilization. So they cannot. They cannot understand. It is very difficult for them. They cannot understand. And they'll never try to understand because they are räkñasas.

(Bhagavad-gita  9.11-14, New York, November 27, 1966)

IN KALI-YUGA THE GOVERNMENT DEVOURS THE CITIZENS THROUGH ILLEGAL TAXATION

That is the duty of the government. To see the citizens happy in this life. They have no grievance for their living condition. They are happy. At the same time, they are preparing for going back to home, back to Godhead. That is good government. And the government who simply levies taxes somehow or other... Every year, the budget is increasing tax. "You give us tax, and you go to hell. It doesn't matter. You give us tax." And the tax is divided amongst themselves. That is government. Whatever... We know in India, the tax collected, eighty percent is spent among the government servants. That's all.

So this is the position of Kali-yuga. Mlecchä räjanya-rüpiëo bhakñayiñyanti prajäs te. That is predicted in the Çrémad-Bhägavatam, that in Kali-yuga the mlecchas, means the rejected from human society, such persons, rogues and fools and rascals, they will take the post of king. Räjanya-rüpiëaù. They are unworthy to be kicked, but they will take the post of government.

Räjanya-rüpiëaù. And what will be their business? Bhakñayiñyanti prajäs te. They will eat the citizens. That's all. Vital force. Vital force, blood-sucking, tax. Durbhikña-kara-péòitäù [SB 12.2.9]. In one side, there will be scarcity of supply. In other side, they will be perplexed with taxes. These are going to be happened. Kara-péòitäù gacchanti giri-känanam. And they will give up their homely life and will go to the forest, to the hills. (SB 2.3.19 June 15 1972 Los Angeles)

THEIR BUSINESS WILL BE TO EAT UP THE VITAL FORCE OF THE PEOPLE

Brahmänanda: It is difficult to come to that understanding, that actually, those who are the leaders are not to be trusted.

Prabhupäda: Yes, leaders means government men. That is described. They are all thieves and rogues, anywhere. Dasyu-dharmabhiù. Dasyu. Dasyu means plunderers, rogues. Unless you become a rogue you cannot go to the government. You cannot... Any honest man cannot stay with these government men. That is not possible at the present age. Any government. Unless... Just like first-class rogue, your Nixon, he became the president. Because he was a first-class rogue, he became the president. So unless you are first-class rogue, you cannot stay within the circle of government men. Räjanya dasyu-dharmabhiù. And their business will be to eat up the vital force of the people. Bhakñayiñyanti prajä sarve räjanya dasyu-dharmabhiù. This is the statement. And people will be harassed. On account of their godlessness, they will be harassed by three things: famine, no rain, and taxation. Taxation by the government, and there will be no rain, there will be famine, no food, and they will be so much embarrassed that they will give up their family and go away, gacchanti giri-kananam, will go, enter into the hills and forest, giving up their hearth and home. This is Kali-yuga. And this is due to their godlessness. On account of this, then the democracy, means anyone, brähmaëa, kñatriya, vaiçya, çüdra, anyone who becomes powerful, he will capture the government post. So the çüdras, they are now powerful. Çüdras. Industry means çüdra. So they will capture the governmental power. Just like Communist.

Devotee (2): Even if we present a Kåñëa conscious candidate, the people will still choose a rogue to lead them, even if we present a candidate who is Kåñëa conscious.

Prabhupäda: Canada we have got already temples.

Brahmänanda: Candidate, someone to stand for the election.

Prabhupäda: You cannot do anything. Unless you turn the mass of people Kåñëa conscious, what you will do there? Suppose one man is elected. All demons. What he will do there? Therefore the first thing is that turn the people Kåñëa conscious, and when they will vote, that is shortened (certain?) Otherwise, it is waste of time.

(Morning Walk, March 11 1975, London)

MAD LEADERS OF KALI-YUGA

Now, it is stated in that chapter that in the Kali-yuga the mlecchä räjanya-rüpiëo bhakñayiñyanti prajäs te. The government will be all mlecchas, not the kñatriyas. Mlecchas. Mlecchä räjanya-rüpiëaù. They'll take the post of government post, government service. And their business will be bhakñayiñyanti prajäs te, they'll devour all the prajäs. And in this way the prajäs will be so much, I mean to say, distressed that gacchanti giri-känanam. Gacchanti giri-känanam. They will be so much, I mean to say, harassed that they will give up their home and hearth and go to the forest. That time is coming. That time is coming. ..

...So people are fed up with this wrong type of civilization. This is not civilization. Ähära-nidrä-bhaya-maithunaà ca. Day and night. This is also warned in the Çrémad-Bhägavatam:

nünaà pramattaù kurute vikarma

yad indriya-prétaya äpåëoti

na sädhu manye yata ätmano 'yam

asann api kleçada äsa dehaù

 [SB 5.5.4]

Åñabhadeva said that "These rascals," pramattaù, pramattaù, "has become mad." Nünaà pramattaù kurute vikarma: "Always engaged in mischievous activities." These rascals, these materialistic persons. Nünaà pramattaù. "They have become mad, and their business is..." Nünaà pramattaù kurute vikarma [SB 5.5.4]. Vikarma, akarma and vikarma. Vikarma means activities which are forbidden in the çästra. Just like according to Vedic principles, at least a brähmaëa, a leader, a king should avoid these four principles of sinful activities. What is that? Meat-eating, illicit sex life, gambling and intoxication. At least, these four men, who is leading the public or who is a brähmaëa or who is a king, he must be very much cautious about... But just see what is the... Everyone, practically, they are addicted to these sinful activities. So therefore they are mad, pramattaù. Vikarma. These are forbidden in the çästras, and they are doing that. Why? Because they are mad. Why they are so mad? Nünaà pramattaù kurute vikarma [SB 5.5.4]. Now, yad indriya-prétaya äpåëoti: "Simply for sense gratification." That's all. Simply for sense gratification. (Bhagavad-gita 7.9-10 Bombay February 24 1974)

PLUNDERERS

That is the desire of Kåñëa, or God, that the state executive head should be as pious as Mahäräja Yudhiñöhira. That is the scheme. Unfortunately, people do not want that. They have now discovered this democracy. Democracy... "Demon-cracy." Shortcut of "demon-cracy" is "democracy." All the demons and rogues, they gather together, somehow or other votes, and occupy the seat, and the business is plundering. The business is plundering. If we talk very much upon this, it will not be very favorable, but according to çästra... We, we talk according to çästra, that the democracy means assembly of rogues and plunderers. That is the statement in the Çrémad-Bhägavatam. Dasyu-dharmabhiù. The government men will be all dasyu. Dasyu means plunderer. Not pickpocket. Pickpocket, somehow or other, if you do not understand, takes something from your pocket, and the plunderer, or the dasyu, he catches you and by force, "If you don't spare your money, I shall kill you." They are called dasyu.

So the, in the present age of Kali, the government men will be dasyu. This is stated in the Çrémad-Bhägavatam. Dasyu-dharmabhiù. You can, we can see practically. You cannot keep your money. You earn with hard labor, but you cannot keep gold, you cannot keep jewelry, you cannot keep money. And... They will take it away by laws.

(Srimad Bhagavatam 1.8.18 Mayapur, September 28 1974)

CARNIVOUROUS DEMONS IN CHARGE OF GOVERNMENT

Government men are always like carnivorous demons called Räkñasas [man-eaters]. Sometimes these government men turn against the conditioned soul and take away all his accumulated wealth. Being bereft of his life's reserved wealth, the conditioned soul loses all enthusiasm. Indeed, it is as though he loses his life. (SB 5.14.16)

PURPORT

The word räja-kula-rakñasä is very significant. Çrémad-Bhägavatam was compiled about five thousand years ago, yet government men are referred to as Räkñasas, or carnivorous demons. If government men are opposed to a person, that person will be bereft of all his riches, which he has accumulated with great care over a long period of time. Actually no one wants to pay income taxes—even government men themselves try to avoid these taxes—but at unfavorable times income taxes are exacted forcibly, and the taxpayers become very morose.

THE ECONOMIC PLAN OF THE DEMONS

Demons are very much interested in advancing a plan by which people will labor hard like cats, dogs and hogs, but Kåñëa's devotees want to teach Kåñëa consciousness so that people will be satisfied with plain living and Kåñëa conscious advancement. Although demons have created many plans for industry and hard labor so that people will work day and night like animals, this is not the purpose of civilization. Such endeavors are jagato'hitaù; that is, they are meant for the misfortune of the people in general. Kñayäya: such activities lead to annihilation. One who understands the purpose of Kåñëa, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, should seriously understand the importance of the Kåñëa consciousness movement and seriously take part in it. One should not endeavor for ugra-karma, or unnecessary work for sense gratification. Nünaà pramattaù kurute vikarma yad indriya-prétaya äpåëoti (SB 5.5.4). Simply for sense gratification, people make plans for material happiness. Mäyä-sukhäya bharam udvahato vimüòhän (SB 7.9.43). They do this because they are all vimüòhas, rascals. For flickering happiness, people waste their human energy, not understanding the importance of the Kåñëa consciousness movement but instead accusing the simple devotees of brainwashing.

(SB 9.24.59)

THE ECONOMIC POLICY OF THE DEMONS

So this is the policy of the demons. Therefore, indräri-vyäkulaà lokam [SB 1.3.28]. When people become, the inhabitants of all different planets, they become very much perturbed on account of these demonic... In this Kali-yuga especially, the demons are so large in number that people are actually in harassment. Every year, they are presenting taxation bill. And wherefrom the taxation will come? The taxation will come from your pocket and my pocket. They will charge income tax, and the storekeepers will increase the value of commodity. So you have to pay. So you are, we are complaining, "Oh, the things are going high price." But why? Because the demons are levying taxes. The... It is not the scarcity of goods. There is sufficient commodity, sufficient. But they have made a economic plan. Just like in your country, the government said that "You don't produce more." Why? If one can produce... Kåñëa has given food. You have to simply little work and produce your food. But in order to keep the balance of price, they say, "Don't produce." Why not produce? So many people are, they are... If actually we produce foodstuff in the ordinary way, then we can produce foodstuff so much that ten times of the whole population of the world can be fed. Ten times. There is no question of scarcity or poverty. There is no question. We create. These demons, they create.

You have no experience. I have got experience. Or some of the Indians who are present... In 1942, the government created artificial famine, artificial famine. The government began to purchase. The poli... That time, the war was going on. So Mr. Churchill's policy was that "Keep the people in scarcity, and they will, they'll voluntarily come and become soldiers." That was the policy. "You have no money. So..., and the another venue is opened. Yes, you become a soldier. You get so much money." People, out of poverty, would go there. That was the policy. So this policy was executed that government began to purchase rice and, I mean to say, commodities which are daily necessities. And... Any price, any price they can offer. Because the currency in their hand. They can print the so-called papers, hundred dollars, and pay you. And you becomes satisfied: "Oh, I have got hundred dollars." But it is a piece of paper. The cheating is from the government. Why the people will not learn how to cheat?

So this is going on. This is called demonic. Demon means for their own sense satisfaction, they are prepared to do anything wrong.

(Srimad Bhagavatam 1.3.28 Los Angeles October 3 1972)

PRABHUPADA’S VIEW OF THE FUTURE

Çyämasundara: Çréla Prabhupäda, what is your view of the future, the history, the future history?

Prabhupäda: Oh, that is there, described in the Çrémad-Bhägavatam. The, the governmental power will go to the rascals and thieves, rogues. And their only business will be how to exploit the people. So one side, by not sufficient rain, there will be scarcity of foodstuff, and one side, the government will tax like anything. In this way, people will be so much harassed that they will give up their hearth and home and go to the forest.

Dr. Arnold Toynbee: Yes.

Prabhupäda: This will be done in Kali-yuga. And gradually, there will be no supply of grains. Especially rice, wheat, sugar, milk, these things will be finished. So people will be obliged to take flesh. These are all stated in the Çrémad-Bhägavatam.

Çyämasundara: In that case, is there any hope in a movement like ours to rectify the situation.

Prabhupäda: Yes. If they take to Kåñëa co... That is also stated, kértanäd eva kåñëasya mukta-saìgaù paraà vrajet [SB 12.3.51]. Kértanäd, by Kåñëa consciousness, one can become free from all these calamities and go back to home, back to Godhead. Only Kåñëa conscious people will be free from all these calamities. Others will have to suffer.

Çyämasundara: So societies in general will not improve, but more people...

Prabhupäda: Improve... Major portion is stated like that. But there is always light and darkness. Always. So the light party will be also there. This is the only, that take to Kåñëa consciousness. That is stated in the Çrémad-Bhägavatam. Kaler doña-nidhe räjann asti hy eko mahän guëaù. In the Kali-yuga, it is an ocean of faults. Doña-nidhi. Nidhi means ocean, and doña means faults. But there is one opportunity. Kaler doña-nidhe räjann asti hy eko mahän guëaù. Very great profit. What is that? Kértanäd eva kåñëasya. Simply by chanting Kåñëa's name and becoming Kåñëa con..., one shall be freed from all these calamities and he'll go back to home, back to Godhead. Simply by this. Kértanäd eva kåñëasya. This very word is used. Mukta-saìgaù paraà vrajet. So this is the only shelter. If people take to Kåñëa consciousness, they'll be saved from all the calamities of this age. Otherwise, there is no other... Now they are going to the forest, the hippies. Eh? Äcchinna-dära-draviëä gacchanti giri-känanam. Giri-känanam means to the forests, to the hills. They'll go. Äcchinna-dära-draviëäm. Dära means wife, and draviëä means money. So they'll be separated from wife and money, and they'll go to the forest and hills, being disappointed. This is happening already. Äcchinna-dära-draviëä gacchanti giri-känanam.

(Room Conversation, July 22 1973 London)

THE DIFFICULTIES WILL INCREASE NOT DECREASE

Dasyu-präyeñu räjasu. Räjasu means government. Räja, king, or government. So monarchy is now abolished practically all over the world. Now it is democratic government. So this so-called democratic government or Communist government, as they are going on, they will become rogues and thieves, dasyu-präyeñu. All the rogues, thieves, plunderers, they will capture. Because it is by vote. So dasyu... Just like plunderers, rogues, they on the point of revolver, they take away your money, so they will take vote on the point of revolver. Actually, it is happening. In Korea it so happened, that sometimes the Communists are coming in power, and sometimes the capitalists coming in power, America and Russia. So poor people, as soon as there is Communist government, they are under the influence: "If you don't do this, then you'll be shot." By force. The people do not know what is government generally. They want to live peacefully. They want a secure place. So that is not their business, modern government. Their only business is how to collect tax and divide it amongst the government servants. That's all...

And another point is this dasyu-präyeñu räjasu. The..., more and more the government will be just like thieves and rogues. We are already experiencing. Now a new law has been passed in India that nobody can keep property more than five to seven lakhs of rupees. So people's incentive to earn money is now being cut down. Formerly it was freedom that you can earn your money as much as you like. Now if you think that "I will earn money, hundreds and thousands of money," but what is the use? The government will take away. That means you will be lazy. The economic development will be checked. Because one who works so hard for economic development because he is under the inspiration that "The more I earn, I will be able to enjoy more." But when this impression is given that "More we earn, it will be taken by government, and I will not be able to enjoy it," naturally he will not work.

So there are so many difficulties. But these difficulties will increase. It will not decrease.

(SB 1.3.25 Los Angeles, September 30 1972)

THE DIFFICULT DAYS ARE AHEAD

So it is not our business to criticize, but the symptoms of Kali-yuga is very, very severe, and it will grow more and more. We have simply passed 5,000 years only of the Kali-yuga, but the duration of Kali-yuga is 400,000, 432,000 of years, out of only we have passed 5,000 years. And after passing 5,000 years, we find so many difficulties, and the more we grow in this Kali-yuga, the days will be more and more difficult. So best thing is that you finish your Kåñëa consciousness business and go back to home, back to Godhead. That will save you. Otherwise, if we come back again, the difficulties, the difficult days are ahead. We have to suffer more and more.

(Srimad Bhagavatam 1.8.32, Los Angeles April 24 1973)

CANABALISM

So the more you become sinful, the food supply will be stopped. This is the law of nature. At the end there will be no foodgrains, at the end of Kali-yuga. That is stated in the Çrémad-Bhägavatam. There will be no foodgrain, no fruits, no milk, no sugar. You have to live on flesh and blood. At that time, being hungry, you will kill your own children and eat flesh and blood. That day is waiting. So this is the civilization. Most heinous civilization. It can only be saved by spreading this Kåñëa consciousness movement. Otherwise there is no way. (SB 1.3.14 Los Angeles, September 19 1972)

IN KALI-YUGA PEOPLE WILL EAT THEIR OWN CHILDREN FOR WANT OF FOOD

Killing business has so expanded that they are killing their own children. Just see the influence of Kali-yuga. The children, they take shelter of the father and mother, thinking very safe. Now, in this Kali-yuga, even there is no safety under the care of father and mother. Just see how this material civilization is progressing. Very, very dangerous. Kalau nañöa-dåçäm. Therefore that Bhägavata verse is there,

kåñëe sva-dhämopagate

dharma-jïänädibhiù (saha)

kalau nañöa-dåçäm (eña)

puräëärko 'dhunoditaù

Very, very abominable condition in this age of Kali. Very, very. It is the beginning of Kali. Now we have to pass through 427,000's of years. Kali-yuga will make progress in that way. And people are now practicing eating their children, and at the end of Kali there will be no food available. They'll have to eat the children just like the snakes do. The snake eat their own children. There are many animals—they eat their own children.

So don't try to repeat your birth again and again in this Kali-yuga. It will be not very happy life. Better sacrifice everything in this life and be fully Kåñëa conscious and go back to home, back to Godhead. Don't wait for the next life. This is very seriously repeated, that "This life I shall finish my Kåñëa consciousness business,"

(CC Adi 1.13 Mayapur April 6 1975)

Time will come in this Kali-yuga when actually people will become what is called man-eater. Still there are existence man-eaters in Africa. So the human society is coming to that position. Like animal, they will eat their own sons and daughters. (Pandal Programme, Delhi, November 20 1971)

PREPARE YOURSELF QUICKLY TO GO BACK TO GODHEAD

Yes. So in Kali-yuga they are not actually functioning as king or president, but still, they are drawing high salaries and respect, doing harm to the people, and still, they are exploiting.

This is Kali-yuga, very abominable condition, precarious condition. You cannot get justice, you cannot get nice food, you cannot get nice treatment, your age is diminished, your power is diminished, everything is topsy-turvied. The best thing is to prepare yourself very quickly to go back to home, back to Godhead, and there you become one of them, like these Vaikuëöha persons.

(SB 2.9.11, Tokyo, April 27, 1972)

DON’T COME BACK TO THE KALI-YUGA

So the more we will pass this Kali-yuga, the symptoms will be more acute, intolerable. So we should care. We should take care of this so that we may not come back again to this Kali-yuga. You see? This life should be utilized. Now we are conscious, Kåñëa conscious. It should be so utilized that no more coming back to United States of America and no more coming back of this condemned earthly planet. That should be the aim. Yad gatvä na nivartante tad dhäma paramaà mama [Bg. 15.6]. We have to be determined to go back to Godhead, to Kåñëa, where going nobody will come to this condemned place. One should know that this is a condemned place. Unless one is fully convinced that this is a place, condemned, one cannot make progress. If he is satisfied with this condemned condition... Just like these Bowery Street men, they are lying on the footpath. They are satisfied. Condemned condition, but they are satisfied. We should not be satisfied in that way. That is very wretched condition. So we are all in wretched condition under the grip of material nature, always suffering threefold miseries. So we should be conscious. Unless we are conscious about this fact, then our human life is spoiled. They say that you spiritualists, you are very pessimistic. Yes. He should be pessimistic. There is no question of being optimistic. Where is the optimistic view?

So unless one becomes very much pessimistic of this material world... Actually, they are, but they want to forget. Somebody is trying to forget it by liquor. Somebody is trying to forget by LSD, and somebody is marijuana, or gaïja. But that forgetfulness will not save you. You have to actually forget it, that "This is a condemned place," and you cannot forget this unless you have got ideal place before you. Therefore this çruti-pramäëa, the Vedic knowledge, will give you: "Here is your ideal place, Kåñëa. Come back to Kåñëa. Try for it. Try your best for this." That is the life. That is human life. And unless one is not conscious to this platform, he is defeated.

(Caitanya Caritamrta Madhya lila 20.318-329, New York December 22)

SUFFERING IN THE DAYS THAT ARE COMING

I can understand your concern about the deterioration of the civilization. Yes, the city will be more dangerous place as Kali-yuga advances. It will be very deteriorating. The modern civilization is so corrupt and as sinful activities are more and more committee., the people will be forced to face more troubles, by nature's order. Our business, however, is simply to take shelter of the Hare Krsna Maha Mantra and pray to the Holy Name to give us protection. We shall be unaffected by all that will happen. Krsna will provide us with working facilities. Be assured of this, that the devotees will be protected by the Holy Name. Others will have to suffer in the days that are coming.

(Letter to Kurusestra 23 July 1973, Bhakivedanta Manor)

THE KILLING MACHINE IS COMING; DON’T TAKE THIS WARNING AS A JOKE. IT IS A FACT

Just like a practical example: a child or a man, you weigh him. When he's alive you will find one weight, and when he's dead you will find another weight. That is practical. It will be heavier. Why heavier? Because there is no more spirit soul. So the more people will be materialistic, the world will be burdened. Therefore there must be war, pestilence, famine, to clear these rascals, clear out. You'll find these things. In Europe, every ten years, twenty years, there is a fight, war. It is the history. From the Greece history, Roman history and Seven Years War, Hundred Years War-wars. There must be war, because they are sinful. The same sinful, killing animals continually. So there is war, reaction. So what is that war? To lessen the burden. To lessen the burden. It becomes very heavy, unbearable by the earth. And to reduce the weight there is natural... And when there is still more power required, then Kåñëa comes: "Arrange for a war in the battlefield of Kurukñetra and bring all the rascals and finish within eighteen days." Within eighteen days sixty-four crores men died. This is... But why? It is Kåñëa's arrangement...

...When people become too much sinful, too much godless, the world becomes overburdened, and there must be some machine to kill. Prakåteù kriyamäëäni guëaiù karmäëi sarvaçaù ahaìkära [Bg. 3.27]. They are thinking independently. No independence. As soon as you become sinful, there is reaction immediately. Immediately there will be war, pestilence, famine, flu, and so on, so on...

...So this will be punishment. In the Kali-yuga, the more people will be godless, and this punishment will be there: no water, no food supply. And over and above that, government taxation. You'll be harassed. Three things will go on...

...One side, I am suffering—no food; another side—whatever money I have got, it will be taken by taxation. Now see what is your position. The position will be people will become mad, so much troubled. Äcchinna-dära-draviëä gacchanti giri-känanam. People will be so much harassed that voluntarily they'll give up their family, home, and go to the forest, hopeless. This will be done. Don't think that Kåñëa consciousness is a joke, is a jugglery. It is the only remedy if you want to save yourself. Otherwise, you are doomed. Don't take it, I mean to say, as a joke. It is a fact.

...It is a question how to become Kåñëa conscious. Otherwise, everything will be finished.

So don't take it very lightly. Take it seriously. Take to Kåñëa consciousness. Kåñëa has come, avatära, and His instruction should be followed. Then we'll be happy. Everything is there in Kåñëa's instruction for our benefit. But because we are rascals, müòha, duñkåtina, narädhama, we have no knowledge, we refuse to accept. This is our qualification.

na mäà duñkåtino müòhäù

prapadyante narädhamäù

mäyayäpahåta-jïänä

äsuraà bhävam äçritäù

 [Bg. 7.15]

Because we have become räkñasas, asuras, we deny to surrender Kåñëa, to surrender to Kåñëa, and we must suffer the (con)sequence. This is Kåñëa consciousness movement.

(Srimad Bhagavatam 1.7.25, Vrindavana, September 22, 1976)

ACCEPT THE LEADERSHIP OF KRISHNA NOT THE DEMONS

You are trying to make adjustments to become happy here. It is not possible, because this place is recommended by Kåñëa: duùkhälayam açäçvatam [Bg. 8.15], it is a place of miseries. How you can become happy here? This is illusion. You can never be happy in this material world, but you are trying to become happy in so many politician, social workers, this and that, simply wasting their time. They cannot be. You have to accept the leadership of Kåñëa. Then you will be happy. If you accept the leadership of rascals, fools, you cannot be happy. Demons. They'll put you into difficulties.

Now, just this evening, one gentleman was speaking about Ahmedabad, that the students have burned so many buses, they're now uncontrollable. So this is going on all over the world. People are frustrated, because on account of these rascal leaders. They are taking the position of leadership, but they're all rascals and fools, they cannot lead. If you want to be happy, take actual leadership of Kåñëa, then you'll be happy.

DON’T TRUST A DEMON

Kings greedy for sense gratification on this earth almost always kill their enemies indiscriminately. To satisfy their own whims, they may kill anyone, even their mothers, fathers, brothers or friends.

PURPORT

We have seen in the history of India that Aurangzeb killed his brother and nephews and imprisoned his father to fulfill political ambitions. There have been many similar instances, and Kaàsa was the same type of king. Kaàsa did not hesitate to kill his nephews and imprison his sister and his father. For demons to do such things is not astonishing. (10.1.67)

THE COMING DICTATORSHIP

Bahuläçva: ...Los Angeles you told Svarüpa Dämodara that in twenty-five more years science will be finished.

Prabhupäda: Yes. Science is already finished. He is regretting that no young man is interested. That means it is finished already. That's a fact. [break] ...is finished, so-called religion is finished, so-called politics is finished—everything. Haräv abhaktasya kuto mahad-guëä [SB 5.18.12]. Because they have finished God, everything will be finished. Zero, only zero.

Bahuläçva: The whole human civilization.

Prabhupäda: Where is civilization? (laughter) The mother is killing child—is that civilization? Where is civilization? Less than doggish civilization. Dog also do not do that. And they are claiming civilization, nonsense rascals. Mother is killing child, and is that civilization? Less than dogs and cats. The dogs and cats also do not kill their children. They try to protect. You know? The cats, they carry their cubs from one place to another so that the male cat may not kill. The tiger also do that. The tiger, they also give protection to the...

Brahmänanda: The rats, they sometimes do that.

Prabhupäda: Everyone. Mother's affection is natural. Now the civilized mother is killing child. This is your civilization. This is your religion, this is your science, philosophy—everything. And for this, you have created so many big, big buildings to create some less than animals. Civilization is finished unless you take to Kåñëa conscious. Now dictatorship is coming, politics. The dictator can arrest anyone without any trial and stop him. Even their own circle, the Communists... Nobody knows where is Kruschev. Indira Gandhi is doing.

Brahmänanda: Even they arrest you for sleeping now.

Prabhupäda: Yes. I have got enough place to sleep, and they will come, "You cannot sleep." What is this civilization?

THE COMING DICTATORSHIP

The king of the country or the emperor of the empire must be so trained that by nature he renounces sense gratification. It is not that because one becomes king he should unnecessarily spend money for sense gratification. As soon as kings became degraded, spending money for sense gratification, they were lost. Similarly, at the present moment, monarchy having been lost, the people have created democracy, which is also failing. Now, by the laws of nature, the time is coming when dictatorship will put the citizens into more and more difficulty. If the king or dictator individually, or the members of the government collectively, cannot maintain the state or kingdom according to the rules of Manu-saàhitä, certainly their government will not endure.

(Srimad Bhagvatam 8.1.7 purport)

PROTEST AGAINST SINFUL GOVERNMENTS

In the present day also, people all over the world may join together in the Kåñëa consciousness movement and protest against the present degraded governments of the world’s godless societies, which are based on all kinds of sinful activities. Çrémad-Bhägavatam states that in the Age of Kali, thieves, rogues and fourth-class people who have neither education nor culture capture the seats of governments to exploit the citizens. This is a symptom of Kali-yuga that has already appeared. People cannot feel secure about their lives and property, yet the so-called governments continue, and government ministers get fat salaries, although they are unable to do anything good for society. The only remedy for such conditions is to enhance the saìkértana movement under the banner of Kåñëa consciousness and protest against the sinful activities of all the world’s governments.

The Kåñëa consciousness movement is not a sentimental religious movement; it is a movement for the reformation of all the anomalies of human society. If people take to it seriously, discharging this duty scientifically, as ordered by Çré Caitanya Mahäprabhu, the world will see peace and prosperity instead of being confused and hopeless under useless governments. There are always rogues and thieves in human society, and as soon as a weak government is unable to execute its duties, these rogues and thieves come out to do their business. Thus the entire society becomes a hell unfit for gentlemen to live in. There is an immediate need for a good government—a government by the people, with Kåñëa consciousness. Unless the masses of people become Kåñëa conscious, they cannot be good men. The Kåñëa consciousness movement that Çré Caitanya Mahäprabhu started by chanting the Hare Kåñëa mahä-mantra still has its potency. Therefore people should understand it seriously and scientifically and spread it all over the world.

PRODUCE YOUR OWN NECESSITIES OF LIFE, CHANT HARE KRISHNA AND READ THESES BOOKS. THERE IS NO OTHER SOLUTION

Prabhupäda: Yes, yes. (pause) Life will be more more dangerous in this Kali-yuga. People will starve. And they... It is already began. The hippies are going to the forest. This will be the whole world situation. Everything will be chaotic.

Amogha: But if they actually go to the forest, then that will be one step.

Prabhupäda: No, it is disappointment. It is simply disappoint... That is not solution. But people will do that. When the one is mad he doesn't know what to do—"Let me go to the forest." Achinna dära-draviëaà gacchanti giri-känanam, it is said. Giri means mountain, and känanam means forest. Giving up their hearth and home... They are already giving up the home, wife, children, and going away. Everybody doing that.

Paramahaàsa: Actually, in so many cases the hippies, they went to the forest, and because there was no standard of spiritual life there, they became discouraged also. They ran into the same problems in the forest that they had in the cities.

Prabhupäda: Yes.

Paramahaàsa: So therefore many of these communities that they started back in, about ten years ago, 1960's, they have all folded up because there was nothing to hold them together.

Prabhupäda: Yes. There is no engagement. Therefore we are proposing that eat nicely, live nicely, and chant Hare Kåñëa. This is the engagement. But they have no such engagement. How they will live? Änandamayo 'bhyäsät (Vedänta-sütra 1.1.12). Every living entity wants some pleasure, but this pleasure is finished. Therefore athäto brahma jijïäsä. Now they seek... Let them seek out pleasure from Brahmän. So that they do not know. Now the situation is then no monies. Then they will tax. Those who are living, they will be disturbed by taxation. They have no other means. Kara-piditaù. Kara means tax, and pidita means disturbed. They will be like that.

Amogha: And they will also be forced out.

Prabhupäda: Yes. Such a huge city, if there is no money, they will tax those who are living there more and more. That is the only alternative. If you want actually peaceful life, then produce your own necessities of life and chant Hare Kåñëa and read these books. This is the only solution. There is no other solution. What is the use of running fifty miles by car to go to one's office and sit down in the office and make plan how to exploit others? This way? This is the business:" Make some plan, bluff people, advertisement, and money will come." This is their business. They are not giving anything, simply bluffing.

SELF-SUFFICENCY IS INSURANCE AGAINST BANKING COLLAPSE

Prabhupäda: And besides that, if we concentrate in farm project there will be no need of exchange, because I'll be satisfied with my products. That's all. There is no need of exchange. Whatever I need, I get in my farm.

Rämeçvara: Weaving, cloth.

Prabhupäda: Everything I get. So I haven't got to go outside for exchange. If you are satisfied in your farm—I am satisfied—then where is question of exchange? There is no need of artificial... So this banking, "fanking," everything will collapse automatically. There is no money, who is going to keep money in the bank?

Hari-çauri: Who needs it?

Prabhupäda: (laughs) So this artificial way of banking, that will be also collapsed.

Hari-çauri: This is revolutionary.

Rämeçvara: It's very hard for the mind to...

Prabhupäda: No, simply do this.

Rämeçvara: Such a dramatic transformation of society.

Prabhupäda: Yes. Whatever it may be... We should be satisfied locally by our food, by our cloth, by our milk. That's all. Let the whole world go to hell. We don't care. If you want to save yourself also, you do this. Here is an example. If you want artificial life, city life, and hellish life, you do. But we shall live like this. This is the ideal life.
